Hydrogen water is a real product category with real science behind it. It is also a category with a serious quality problem, and most consumers have no idea how to tell the difference between a product that delivers on its promise and one that is effectively just water.
The issue comes down to one word: retention.
Why Hydrogen Escapes
Molecular hydrogen (H2) is the smallest molecule in existence. That property is part of what makes it therapeutically valuable, as it can cross cell membranes and enter mitochondria. It is also what makes it extraordinarily difficult to keep dissolved in water.
H2 diffuses out of conventional packaging rapidly. Standard aluminum cans, plastic bottles, and even most glass containers allow hydrogen to escape within hours or days of production. By the time a product reaches a retail shelf, sits in distribution, and arrives in your hand, the hydrogen concentration may have dropped below any clinically relevant threshold.
Research from the Molecular Hydrogen Institute identifies 0.5 parts per million (ppm) as the minimum therapeutic concentration based on the existing clinical literature. Most products on the market either do not reach that level at the point of manufacture or fall below it well before consumption.
The Can Technology Question
This is why packaging technology is not a secondary consideration for hydrogen water. It is the central one. The science of molecular hydrogen is only relevant if the delivery mechanism preserves it.
Specialized can linings and pressure-sealed formats have been developed specifically to address hydrogen diffusion. The key is minimizing the contact between dissolved H2 and the container wall, and maintaining the pressure differential that keeps hydrogen in solution. Not all cans are built the same way, and the difference between a standard aluminum can and one engineered for gas retention is the difference between a therapeutic product and expensive plain water.
What MINDBALANCED Does Differently
Our 16oz format uses a can technology specifically selected for its hydrogen retention properties. We do not disclose the name of the technology to outside parties. It is a core part of what makes MINDBALANCED different, and protecting that advantage protects our customers.
What we can say is this: the format decision was driven entirely by science. The move from 12oz to 16oz was not arbitrary. The larger format, combined with the can liner, creates the conditions needed to maintain dissolved hydrogen concentration from the moment of production through to when you open it.
The science of hydrogen water is real. But science requires delivery. If H2 is not in the can when you drink it, none of the research applies to you.
